The Young Feminist Network was established in July 2020 by Everystory Sri Lanka to bring together people interested in learning more about feminism, particularly from a Sri Lankan and South Asian perspective. This month, our newsletter is curated on the theme Gendered Geographies.

LETTER FROM
THE EDITOR

Dear Reader,

Lately, I’ve found myself reflecting on my experience navigating the world while female. While we often mean this metaphorically, every so often women confront very literal barriers to movement as well. I first encountered these in the pages of Caroline Criado Perez’s Invisble Women, which gave me a framework for thinking about women’s urban mobility experiences.

This issue explores the gendered geographies—both literal and metaphorical, online and off—that women navigate daily, and almost always in relation to others. Through art, literature, and film, we consider how these spaces shape our lives, and what more inclusive futures and alternative possibilities might look like.

As we ease into a new theme for March 2026, and bringing with it a series of reflections on Women and the City, we invite you to explore these resources and share your thoughts, experiences, and feedback—we’re always glad to hear from you at [email protected] .

In solidarity,
Chathuni Uduwela

WE’RE READING

Fundamentally by Nussaibah Younis

In Fundamentally, Nadia, a British academic flees from heartbreak and attempts to start anew in Iraq, leading a deradicalization program for ISIS brides… with disastrous consequences. The book speaks to competing narratives and expectations surrounding faith, femininity and belonging that Muslim women face in the West, and it draws liberally from author Nussaibah Younis’s background as a a peace-building practitioner and a globally-recognized expert on contemporary Iraq to do so. The result is a funny, often raunchy take on a very grave subject.

Fundamentally was shortlisted for the 2025 Women’s Prize in Fiction.

WE’RE WATCHING

Sultana’s Dream (2023)

In 1905, Bengali feminist thinker Rokeya Hossain published Sultana’s Dream, a work of feminist science fiction featuring Ladyland, a place entirely run by women. Spanish director Isabel Herguera’s 2023 animated film draws on this story as witnessed by a young backpacking artist from Spain.

Set in Bengal, this story proposes an alternate reality that, with luck, resonates universally.
