The Young Feminist Network was established in July 2020 by Everystory Sri Lanka to bring together people interested in learning more about feminism, particularly from a Sri Lankan and South Asian perspective. This month, our newsletter is curated on the theme of Envisioning the Future.

LETTER FROM
THE EDITOR

Dear Reader,

As 2025 draws to a close, it offers an opportunity for activists and educators to take stock of progress made in securing education, health, and rights for all girls, as well as the persistent inequalities that must be overcome for girls the world over to realise their full potential.

In this issue, we envision the future of girls and women: in terms of their physical and virtual environments, the opportunities afforded to them, and others still out of reach. We explore intergenerational relationships that help bridge some of these gaps, and the alliances that can help make these imagined futures possible.

We also invite you to stand with girls and support their leadership: to share girls’ stories, advocate for change, create girl-led spaces, and lend your voice in ensuring that the needs of girls are met. As always, we invite you to share your thoughts, responses, and suggestions—on this or any other feminist issue—at [email protected] .

We wish you happy reading and hope this newsletter inspires you to create a more promising future for the girls in your life.

In solidarity,
Chathuni Uduwela

THIS MONTH
WE’RE READING

The Elegance of the Hedgehog

This novel by Muriel Barbery follows Renée, the concierge of an apartment building in Paris, and Paloma, a pre-teen resident of the same building, who find kinship in one another with the help of Ozu, a new resident who sees through the masks they wear. Featuring characters who take pains to hide their intellect in order to fit in the world, The Elegance of the Hedgehog uses an unlikely intergenerational friendship to transform the way in which each character sees herself and the world. For one of the characters, this makes all the difference between life and death.

The Elegance of the Hedgehog was translated from the original French by Alison Anderson.
